Introduction
This album of photographs is part of a series of Alaska Community
Albums prepared by the Alaska Division of State Libraries and Museums from
the Alaska Historical Library photograph collection. This project has been
funded with the assistance of a matching grant from the U.S. Department
of the Interior, National Park Service, under provisions of the National
Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The grant was received through the Alaska
Division of Parks. The albums were developed to share this information
source, stimulate interest and study of local history, an help satisfy
the needs of historical researchers. Such material is invaluable for historic
preservation to show original structures and sites.
A special file of historical photographs providing an over-view
of Alaska's history was organized by the Alaska Purchase Centennial Commission
and used for a variety of purposes during the 1967 celebration. Some of
the photographs were from the Alaska Historical Library collection and
others are photographs of illustrations from books, maps, etc. in the library.
The Commission also acquired photographs from the U.S. National Archives
and other sources.
This file of photographs makes available an interesting array
of portraits of persons important in Alaska's history, photographs of communities,
transportation, gold rush views, and other subjects are depicted.
There is a negative file of the Alaska Purchase Centennial
photograph collection so prints can be obtained for a fee. Reproduction
information is available on request.
The generosity of many donors has enriched and increased the
research value of the collections and information available to the citizens
of the State. Please contact the Historical Librarian if you are interested
in contributing to the Library.
